A Special Earth Day Treat

April 20, 2010

What are your plans for Earth Day 2010?  A little composting?  Tree Planting?  Reducing your shower to less than 5 minutes (yeah, right…)?

I got the chance to teach the Diva and Grand Slam all about the benefits of Solar Light — compliments of Allsop Home and Garden.

Abbey at Allsop Home and Garden stopped by to say hi and was kind enough to send me a few samples of their Soji Solar Lanterns and the Soji Pod Lantern —  solar-powered nylon lanterns with LED lights and rechargeable batteries.  You can’t get more green than that….

I took advantage of this decorating opportunity and turned it into a learning opportunity.  As I put together the lanterns (so easy even I can do it),  I explained how the lanterns use the sun’s rays to… blah, blah, blah and slowly fade to black…

In the back of my head, I was reminding myself that solar lights equal no plugs.  No plugs equal the ability for me to place them anywhere.  The ability for me to execute lighting equals no relying on the hubby.   Honestly, though, I am all about the lack of plug, wires, and an unholy electric bill (read: Christmas 2009).

I was so proud of myself for having the engineering skillz to find a counterweight for the twine.  I used a rogue drawer knob, tied it to the twine, and threw it up over the branch and then proceeded to tie it off.  The twine looks horrible but I couldn’t find the fishing line.  I think a redo is in order — perhaps this time with someone older than the ages of 3 and 5 years old  helping me!

Here’s the best part of my little solar power lesson:   As a special treat to Shes.No.Martha readers, visit and enter SHESNOMARTHA  into the coupon code at checkout for $5.00 off your order!

Not only that, but leave me a comment and one lucky winner will get the Chartreuse Soji Pod Lantern (the green one shown above!)

Now, saving some green on Earth Day is something to celebrate!

If we ever get around to building the deck and patio, I will be back to purchase this:

Ditto what Angie said. What a great summer gift or wedding gift for someone. My backyard is calling for these. Now the fun – what color, so many fun choices. I am spreading this website to all my friends.

hmmmm….not sure what I adore the most. These very stylish and clever laterns…or that picture of the Diva looking rather devilish. Much more attractive and less “fragrant” than the composting pile I planned to start “green education” with wee Ian.
